Signs of Gum Disease

Are your gums healthy? Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a serious condition that is reasonably preventable. If you’ve noticed your gums looking swollen, red, or bleeding you could be affected by gum disease.

There are a number of factors that contribute to an individual getting gum disease. What you eat/drink,your age, if you smoke, and how you brush/floss are all reasons that gum disease could affect you.

Acidic, sugary, and sticky foods and drinks should be avoided because they feed the bacteria that causes plaque. Plaque is what will infect your gums if left to its own devices, so it’s crucial to get a thorough cleaning. Professional dentists will be able to clean your teeth the best, but you should be taking preventative steps at home to ensure gum disease won’t affect you.

If gum disease goes untreated it could develop into a more severe condition called periodontitis. Periodontitis will cause pockets to form between your gums and teeth which will become infected. These infections can destroy the teeth and supportive structures in the mouth, causing teeth to become loose.

All of this is easily preventable with professional checkups, proper brushing techniques, regular flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash. Schedule your check up with Mogren Dental and start your gum disease prevention today.
